Michael Yon...
Just got a message from Michael Yon that he's headed back to Iraq as we speak after a couple months hiatus. Micheal is my most trusted journalist covering the war. This time he'll be reporting "outside the wire" vs. being embedded with a combat unit as he was last time. Frankly, I think he's nuts, but look forward to reading his posts from the front again. Check him out at Michael Yon's Online Magazine.

What's so crazy? Iraq is totally safe.
Dave's right.
Hasn't the war been over for, like, 2 years?
It's a big effort to read all his posts, but this guy is something else. He was the ONLY independent journalist embedded in all of Iraq for a long time. He's an author and former soldier. He used his knowledge of the chain of command and other connections to get access to some notable folks during his last stay with the 24th Infantry Div. (Deuce Four Punishers) in Mosul including the Army's Command Sergeant Major (great post!). On the day before Deuce Four was to pack up and rotate back to the states, Yon went out on a routine patrol with the company commander, Col. Kurilla, and two newbe's. They ended up in a hairy alley way fire fight. The Col. got shot, the newbe's froze, and Yon ended up picking up a weapon and firing it at the insurgents. Again, you’ve got to read the post (Gates Of Fire). Amazing story.
While the Col. and the higher ups were understanding given the situation, they were nonetheless pissed about it. More than Yon leads on in his related posts I think.
While he's been given huge accolades for his work while there (has a photograph up for a Pulitzer, along with a some of his written work), he's run into some snags with the army getting back in the shit. Without funds and resources from a big MSM news org to block for him (he's fiercely opposed to reporting for a MSM org), I have a feeling he's just decided to go it alone on account.
I wouldn’t doubt he embeds himself with an Iraqi military unit or something. Whatever it is he does, it’ll be exciting to read.
