"Pot? This is the Kettle. You're Black..."

TEHRAN, Iran - has successfully enriched uranium for the first time, a landmark in its quest to develop nuclear fuel, hard-line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Tuesday. He insisted, however, that his country does not aim to develop nuclear weapons.

In a nationally televised speech, Ahmadinejad called on the West "not to cause an everlasting hatred in the hearts of Iranians" by trying to force Iran to abandon uranium enrichment.

The guy who could easily light up each of his countries cities like Las Vegas on pennies a day with all the energy his country sits on needs nuke power this bad.

I'm not worried though. I'm sure Ahmadinejad has been careful not to cause any everlasting hatred of us by any of his own comments or actions.

Geezzz...

Once again, it's our responsibility to be the city on the hill. We can't worry about who's the pot and who's the kettle, we have to keep things diplomatic.

This is going to get interesting... and quite possibly ugly. I pray that we have the tact to take care of this. I have no idea how.

Call me what you will, but I don't care if they do develop The Bomb. It's going to happen anyway, we might as well be nice about it and try not piss them off - oops did that already...

Chrispy,

As far as foreign policy goes this may be the first time I think we agree with each other.

It appears to me that even the countries who are buying most of their oil from Iran are not happy about the prospects of these guys having a bomb. I hope a coalition and the UN can apply the pressure needed to dissuade them from building one. If sanctions and diplomatic pressure are going to be effective it means everybody's got to hold the line. No food/oil cheating.

Jackson,

If Iran weren't lead by a bunch of paranoid, terrorist harboring, extremist nuts, I'd be inclined to not give a shit one way or the other, but given that isn't at all the case, then another approach is warranted.

"It's going to happen anyway, we might as well be nice about it and try not piss them off - oops did that already..."

A known and proven failed policy.

Interestingly, Europe seems to be lining up behind us on this one. Russia came out this morning and basically condemned Iran using the same language that the United States had used already. That was significant.

I don't know that I would be as fatalistic as Jackson about their developing the bomb. Creating nuclear weapons requires a sustained effort and a significant amount of national resources. It's not inevitable by any stretch, particularly given the cost in both money and international influence.

Our best way out of this is to continue to develop the support of other nations, which seems to be easier in this case than it was on Iraq. I have no doubt that we will still be considered the bad guys even if we act with the support of most Western nations, however.

I have no faith in the UN to apply pressure through a sanctions program that will work. In fact, have sanctions ever worked? I think of Iraq and Cuba and North Korea and I don't see much benefit.

I'm not sure we're in nearly as much danger as being "the bad guys" in this case.

After all, we're talking about nukes, not a President misleading a nation and starting a highly questionable war (which is getting more questionable every day - unless you consider weather balloons to be "weapons of mass destruction").

Interestingly, WMDs were never a strong part of my support for the invasion of Iraq.

Well of course not, you guys just love wars. Convincing the peace loving Americans (all three of us) is another story.
