HBO's Baghdad ER...

I watched this last night before the Sopranos and Big Love. This is a well put together documentary about the day in the lives of those who man Baghdad's Green Zone ER.

Quick thoughts...

If you can get through the grisliness of it, one thing that cannot be denied is that the best people in the world are there in that hospital doing exceptional work. The professionalism the Army medical teams display is shocking in it's efficiency and effectiveness.

Soldiers who are brought in and are conscious are informed that they will be shipped to either Germany or Walter Reed and their first reaction is, "You mean I'm not going to return to my unit? Can't I just go back to my unit?" Amazing. Simply the best America has to offer.

Helicopter pilots are heroes of the highest magnitude. Michael Yon recently commented that if those in command of Helo jocks knew all of what these men and women do that is not approved or otherwise advisable when flying missions, they’d all be court marshaled. Helicopter pilots will ALWAYS go the extra mile no matter what whether it be providing cover fire, rescue operation, or medical evac and they prove it in this film. They are truly angels to all combat units.

Ultimately, the film takes the war to the human level. I have no objection to this at all. We need to be reminded of what is going on everyday in this war.

WARNING: This film is NOT for the faint of heart. As you might imagine, there are many graphic scenes of the worst nature. If you elect to watch it, prepare yourself for it.

Great show. Certainly highlights the commitment of our Armed Forces.

2,400 could be a lot higher!

it was tough to watch but important.

Well done, I can't say I enjoyed it, but I'm glad I watched it.

I don't have HBO, so Sunday night is date night for me. I casually caught the last 15 minutes or so of Baghdad ER before the much anticipated Sopranos/Big Love double feature, not knowing at all what I was in for. I was beside myself with grief. While I believe the show goes to great pains to maintain its journalistic integrity (which I believe it does}, I couldn't help thinking that if this show doesn't stop the war then America is dead. I didn't want to wake up to another day's headlines, because this show makes you value the horror behind them. We all die alone, but it's unbearable to watch. I too, was left with an unfathomable respect for not only the professionalism of the Army medical teams, but mostly for their humanity. Along with the 2,400 dead and the uncounted limbless and mangled, I count everyone in that ER as a casualty because I can't see anyone of them returning to the US with a shred of sanity. To watch a man count his blessings because he ONLY lost a thumb is sickening. By the last frame I was sobbing and full of rage and ready to do whatever it takes to put an end to it. Then The Sopranos came on and the unspeakable violence and snappy one-liners swiftly lulled me back into the oblivious coma we call life... Headlines as expected. Same as it ever was.

Sorry you had to watch this particular film on your date night Clarkie. The emotional impact this movie made seems to have been similar amongst many of us.
