This can't be good...

Out of all the Democratic candidates who ran for their party’s coveted nomination this year, the one individual I liked the least was John Edwards. I’ve thought he was a shifty bastard going all the way back to the last presidential election. I won’t bother to recap my complete and utter distrust for the guy, but you can take my word for it.

Looks like my feelings might just be pretty well founded. I heard about this on the radio on the way in this morning and was shocked that MSM hasn’t picked up on it yet, but my hunch is that they are simply verifying accounts with witnesses. If it turns out to be hype by a shit rag of a pseudo newspaper, they ought to be drawn and quartered for going to print with it, but if it’s true, the dude's cred is toast and his political career is done needless to say.

I'll refrain from further debasement of the guy until more of the story comes out. For the record and for his wife’s sake I hope it’s not true.

UPDATE: What he said...

John Edwards thanks you for your clear-headedness in allowing the National Enquirer story to be confirmed, but requests that you continue the further debasement.

(How does the Enquirer piece found your political opinion? Is your main complaint about Edwards that he's a swordsman?)

Wow. I am interested to see what develops here...

Stinkrock- IF the allegations are true here, I'd conclude that, beyond all political differences, my gut take on the guy was right. From a personality perspective, I've always thought of John Edwards as a giant ego and an opportunist, a supposed liberal minded guy who made his fortune in a very unliberal way, suing tobacco companies.

Again, if it’s true, I have no problem making the characterization that a man who cheats on his wife while she’s struggling with cancer speaks volumes about his character and is certainly unworthy of being trusted to be president, or VP of the United States.

The MSM had no problems following the National Enquirer when it broke the story of Rush Limbaugh's painkiller problem. It's interesting that they have almost totally ignored this one.

But it would be classy for Edwards to be visiting his mistress while his wife battles cancer.

TA--

Leading up to the damning Enquirer article, you've still only offered two pieces of evidence as to why Edwards is a bad guy. (a) Your gut feeling (although, I presume, you only know him through his media portrayals.) (b) He made millions suing tobacco companies.

If you don't like the guy, fine. If it's based on his politics, it's justified. I'm not arguing the seriousness of the allegations against him. But to suggest that the Enquirer article proves what you've known all along is inconclusive, based on what you've presented.

Dave: Rush Limbaugh is a maudlin radio entertainer. He's not even a journalist. If the MSM didn't pick up an Amy Winehouse drug story, your analogy would be legitimate.

But I agree with your second statement. It would be classier if John Edwards visited his mistress if his wife didn't have cancer. I guess we'll have to find out if he cheated on his wife before or after she contracted cancer to compare his character to every other politician who has cheated on his wife.

Mike, what other secret rules of journalism can you share with us? This is fascinating.

Mike - I'm not sure what you're taking issue with here. I've said that I disliked Edwards politics for reasons that I'm sure you can figure out without me drafting a lengthy post (which would no doubt be boring as hell ta boot), in addition to taking issue with the way he's made his fortune. I've also found him to be a smarmy egoist from a personality perspective. I can’t point to any particular appearance, or debate, which cinched it for me, but that’s how he's rubbed me since the beginning. If there is truth to these Enquirer allegations, my previous characterization (my gut compass) would appear to be working. On that topic, that’s the point I was making if I was trying to make one at all.

I think Dave picked up the main theme of the post which is this: Based on recent past scandalous stories such as the alleged McCain affair, and the fact that an incident that allegedly had so many people bare witness to, why aren’t the MSM swarms scrubbing every nook and cranny of that hotel? Up until this week, John Edwards name was still being circulated as a candidate for Barak’s VP, so there can be no excuse to relevance, yet after hearing about it first on the radio on my way into work I’ve not heard a single thing about it.

I also stated that I hope it isn’t true. Despite my misgivings about him as a politician, president, or VP, the thought of him cheating on his wife while she’s struggling with cancer and the blowback effect it will have on his kids would put him at a level of douchebagery not many have attained.

I’ve got a sister struggling with cancer right now and her fiancé is the greatest guy in the world. It’s hard for me to comprehend him or anybody else who’s in the same predicament ducking out and dipping their wick like that. What I am certain I CAN wrap my head around is how I’d feel about my sister’s fiancé if he did do the unimaginable.

Again, I hope it’s not true.

Adultery aside, as a bald man, I have to admire his hair. On the other hand, I don't need $4000 haircuts.

I always liked the guy, and had none of the knee-jerk reactions to him that Tony did. Par for the course on that account.

Anybody take into consideration that his wife may have known? Even given her blessing?

Aren't adultery and politics long standing associates?

Way to go Jackson for missing the point of the discussion.

IF, again IF this story turns out to be true, would it change your mind about the guys presidential/VP worthiness?

I just saw that this has become the #1 viewed story on the SJ Mercury News website.

Well done, Alva! Way to wake up those cs-ers in MSM!

You'd vote for a guy who cheated on his wife and hid the fact that he'd fathered a child from her for president? Stop pretending to be better than the rest of us.

The hell you would.
